The History of Gregmark Music

Gregmark Music is more than a vintage catalogue; it is the birthplace of the modern pop production sound. Founded in 1961 by industry visionaries Lester Sill and Lee Hazlewood, the label recorded at Hollywood’s legendary Gold Star Studios.

It was here, under Sill's mentorship, that a young Phil Spector began experimenting with the echo chambers and layered instrumentation that would define the global "Wall of Sound" era.

...
Beyond the production techniques, Gregmark was a hub for the industry's finest talent. The label's recording sessions featured the core lineup of what would become The Wrecking Crew, laying down the backing tracks for hits by The Paris Sisters ("I Love How You Love Me") and Ray Sharpe ("Linda Lu").

Lester Sill also challenged the era's racial barriers, championing diverse artists from electric blues giant T-Bone Walker to doo-wop groups like The Pentagons. Although Sill did not play an instrument, his innate ear sought out songwriters like Carole King and Gerry Goffin, bridging the gap between R&B and Pop.

Today, Equals Music preserves this legacy. In partnership with Gregmark Music, we manage the worldwide master rights for this authentic 1960s collection, offering seamless sync licensing for film, television, and advertising projects seeking that genuine Gold Star sound.
